e-SENS was presented at the event Digital Venice 2014, which was hosted by the City of Venice and promoted by the Italian Presidency of the Council of the European Union with the support of the European Commission – DG Connect.

The event focused on digital innovations as the key to sustainable economic development and aimed at adopting the Venice Declaration, which stresses the importance of digital technology for the development of a true Digital Single Market.

Besides a high-level meeting between the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, the European Commission Vice President Neelie Kroes and other policy makers from all over Europe, five workshops took place during which administration/government representatives from every policy level, researchers, the IT industry and other experts could discuss and give valuable input to the future European policies on the Digital Agenda.

e-SENS and its vision of a future governance structure for the interoperable delivery of public services was presented in Workshop 5 — Smart government and Public Sector Modernisation, which was chaired by Robert Madelin (Director General Connect). The need for a governance structure for digital services is becoming more and more evident. It is important that all actors (Member States, EC, private sector, standardisation organisation) cooperate and work together in order to benefit in a sustainable way from technical solutions which are developed.

The workshop was attended by participants from different European countries. Representatives of the IT industry were greatly interested in e-SENS and recognized the importance of the project for the creation of a true Digital Single Market in the EU.
